A possible labour dispute is developing beneath the surface of Lake Huron after a group of local pickerel reportedly began exploring membership in an international walleye union.
The move follows the rejection of their application to the Lake Huron Perch Association, which cited what it described as an “ongoing identity crisis.”
Several picket signs have since appeared just offshore, including “Walleye Solidarity,” “Union Yes,” and “Local Perch Said No.”
Officials have noted that pickerel and walleye are, in practical terms, the same fish. However, local representatives insist the distinction remains important for organizational purposes.
No spokesperson from the perch association has come forward, though movement beneath the water suggests tensions remain high.
At this time, it remains unclear whether the pickerel understand collective bargaining or are simply participating in what one beachgoer described as “a very wet identity crisis.”
Experts say the situation remains complex, both biologically and administratively.
